Important Considerations

Remember that actual terms, rates, and costs will vary by lender, your credit score, and current market conditions. These calculators provide educational estimates only and do not constitute professional financial advice. Always compare multiple offers and consult a financial professional before making decisions.

How the math works

Monthly payment uses the standard amortisation formula P x r(1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n - 1), where P is the amount financed, r the monthly rate (APR divided by 12) and n the number of monthly payments. Amount financed = price + tax and fees - down payment - trade-in equity.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the negotiated price, not the advertised sticker price: the out-the-door amount is what actually gets financed.
  2. Add your down payment and any trade-in equity, since both cut the amount financed dollar for dollar.
  3. Use the APR from a real pre-approval rather than a dealer's headline 'as low as' rate.
  4. Select the term you are genuinely being offered; longer terms shrink the payment but raise total interest.
  5. Read the total interest line before signing, because the term usually moves it more than the rate does.
  6. Sanity-check the answer against the 20/4/10 rule: 20% down, a four-year term, and total car costs under 10% of gross monthly income.

Frequently asked questions

How is my car payment calculated?
Using the amortized loan formula: Monthly Payment = Pv × [r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n - 1], where Pv is loan amount, r is monthly rate (APR/12/100), and n is number of months.
What's a reasonable car payment?
Aim for ≤15% of take-home pay total (payment + insurance + gas). The 20/4/10 rule: 20% down, 4-year loan, ≤10% of gross income for all car costs. At $5k/month take-home, target ≤$750/month all-in.
Does a longer loan term save money?
Longer terms (72 vs 60 months) lower monthly payments but cost significantly more in total interest. A $30k loan at 7%: 60 months = $5,610 interest; 72 months = $7,394 interest ($1,784 more).
How does down payment affect my payment?
Every $1,000 down payment reduces monthly payment by ~$20–$30 (at 7% over 60 months). A $10k down vs $5k on a $35k car saves ~$100/month and $3,000+ in total interest.
Should I include sales tax in my car loan?
Including tax means you pay interest on the tax portion ($150–$300 extra over 5 years) but reduces out-of-pocket costs. Not including requires more cash down but saves interest. Calculate both to compare.
