Illinois Vehicle Registration Fees 2026: What the Secretary of State Charges
Illinois ties registration cost to model year rather than weight for cars, so a 2024+ car is $164 while older ones step down — and Cook County layers on a surcharge the rest of the state does not pay.
Registration priced by model year
The Illinois Secretary of State sets passenger-vehicle registration by age. A 2024-or-newer car is $164, 2020–2023 models are $142, 2016–2019 are $124, and the base fee for other eligible vehicles is $151. Light trucks under 8,000 lbs follow the same bands. It is a quirk worth knowing: two identical cars a few model years apart can owe $40 different amounts.
Title transfer and the Cook County add-on
Transferring a title costs $95, with a $15 lien recording fee if there is a lender. Electronic transfers are slightly cheaper at $85. Standard plates run $39 a year, and specialty or vanity plates range $45–$99. Cook County residents pay a $25 registration surcharge, DuPage adds $20, and Will County adds $15 — a Chicago driver therefore starts about $25 higher than someone downstate.
New residents get 30 days
Move to Illinois and you have 30 days to register an out-of-state car. Bring the out-of-state title, proof of insurance, and your Illinois license, and surrender the old plates. The fee is based on model year, same as a renewal, but you also owe the title transfer.
The Chicago emissions test
If you live in the Chicago metro (Cook, DuPage, and parts of Will and Madison counties) and your gasoline car is more than four years old, you need a biennial emissions test ($20) before plates renew. Skip it and the state blocks renewal. EVs and hybrids are exempt.
Timing the fee changes
Illinois reviews these fees annually and posts changes in late fall. The 2026 numbers are modest steps up from 2025. Renewing online through the Secretary of State portal is faster than an in-person facility, but title transfers still want you at a branch with the signed title in hand.
