How the math works
Savings = (miles driven / miles per kWh) x grid price per kWh, less the same energy cost at your solar production cost, plus any applicable tax credit claimed in the first year. Federal clean vehicle credits are claimed on your return and are subject to eligibility rules, not applied at the point of sale by this tool.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your annual mileage and the vehicle's efficiency in miles per kWh, or its MPGe from official EPA data.
- Enter the price per kWh you currently pay, taken from your own utility bill.
- Enter your solar production cost per kWh, or your effective rate after any net metering.
- Enter the vehicle price and check whether it qualifies for a federal clean vehicle credit.
- Enter any applicable state or utility incentive, which vary and change frequently.
- Treat the result as an annual figure and check it against the payback period of the solar system itself.
