How the math works
Real towing capacity is the lower of two limits: the vehicle's rated maximum trailer weight, and GCWR minus the loaded weight of the tow vehicle. Payload left over after passengers, cargo and tongue weight is the figure that usually binds first.
How to use this calculator
- Read the tow rating for your exact configuration: ratings change with engine, axle ratio and cab style.
- Weigh the tow vehicle loaded, including passengers and cargo, rather than trusting the brochure kerb weight.
- Subtract that loaded weight from GCWR to find the trailer weight the combination can actually haul.
- Subtract tongue weight from payload, since tongue weight is carried by the tow vehicle.
- Add any aftermarket accessories, because they count against both payload and GCWR.
- Stay within the lowest applicable limit, and check axle and tyre ratings as well as the headline figure.
