How the math works
GVWR is the maximum the vehicle itself may weigh, set by the manufacturer; payload is GVWR minus the vehicle's kerb weight. GCWR covers the vehicle plus trailer. These ratings are certification limits and determine which licence, registration and operating rules apply.
How to use this calculator
- Find GVWR and GCWR on the certification label in the driver's door jamb, not in a sales brochure.
- Weigh the empty vehicle with a full tank to establish its real kerb weight.
- Subtract kerb weight from GVWR to find available payload.
- Deduct passengers, cargo, tongue weight and accessories from that payload figure.
- Check the gross axle weight ratings as well, because payload is often limited by one axle first.
- Confirm which licence class and registration category your GVWR falls into before you buy.
